The Utrecht institute of Linguistics OTS is a research institute of the Faculty of Humanities of Utrecht University. UiL OTS aims at developing scientific expertise in the systems underlying language, speech and their use. It sets out to achieve this goal by carrying out a research programme comprising fundamental research in these areas, by furthering the application of the insights thus obtained, and by offering a high-quality graduate programme to qualified PhD-students. It was founded in 1987, and extended its scope in 1997.
UiL OTS participates in the national research schools Landelijke Onderzoekschool Taalwetenschap (abbreviated LOT; the Netherlands Graduate School of Linguistics) and also participates in the graduate Network Logica. UiL OTS seeks to promote intensive cooperation between several areas of Linguistics and related disciplines outside linguistics such as logic, computer science, and cognitive sciences. Specific domains of interdisciplinary co-operation are: the lexicon, primary and secondary language acquisition, language teaching, human language processing, relations between language, logic and information, discourse and conversation analysis, language and speech pathology, text linguistics, text design and evaluation, and language and speech technology.
