Utrecht is an old city, founded by the Romans, and now the fourth largest city in the country. It is located in the heart of The Netherlands on the banks of the river Rhine. Its university is more than 350 years old and is the largest in the country with about 25,000 students.
Utrecht has a beautiful, medieval city centre with canals, old churches, museums, a modern concert hall and a municipal theatre. Open air markets, pubs and restaurants can easily be found. The city is also a business centre with the largest commercial fair (Jaarbeurs) in The Netherlands.
The conference will be held at the Educatorium. The Educatorium is
a multifunctional educational building that was completed at the end
of 1997 in the heart of the university centre De Uithof in Utrecht.
The Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) designed The
Educatorium under the supervision of the famous architect Rem
(Academiegebouw), Domplein 29, Utrecht
Some events at the conference will take place at the University Hall (Academiegebouw). The University Hall is situated in the centre of Utrecht at the Dom square near the Dom tower. It was a gift to the university from the citizens and the province of Utrecht in 1886, on the occasion of the university's 250th foundation day. All academic ceremonies such as inaugural lectures and graduation ceremonies take place here.
