Curriculum Vitae

Hugo Quené received both his M.A. in Phonetics (1984) and his Ph.D. in Linguistics (1989) from Utrecht University, The Netherlands. His dissertation was a phonetic study of speech segmentation, about phonetic cues for word boundaries. He has worked as an assistant professor in Phonetics at Leiden University, and as a research scientist developing linguistic analyses and intonation rules for Dutch text-to-speech systems. In 1989 he was appointed as assistant professor in Phonetics at Utrecht University. He has spent the year 2001-2002 as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, U.S.A., where he studied speech rhythm and other topics. From 1999-2006 he held an adjunct position in the Liberal Arts program at Utrecht University.
From 2004 to 2016 he was senior associate professor in Phonetics at Utrecht University. Since 2016 Quené is professor in Quantitative Methods of Empirical Research in the Humanities. His current research topics include quantitative research methods, variation in pronunciation, speech prosody, and speech and emotion. He has taught many courses in phonetics, linguistics and other topics at the BA, MA and graduate levels. Since 2014 he is also director of the undergraduate school in Languages, Literature and Communication at Utrecht University.
