Curriculum Vitae

Hugo Quené received both his M.A. in Phonetics (1984) and his Ph.D. in Linguistics (1989) from Utrecht University, The Netherlands. His dissertation was a phonetic study of speech segmentation, about phonetic cues for word boundaries. He has worked as an assistant professor in Phonetics at Leiden University, and as a research scientist developing linguistic analyses and intonation rules for Dutch text-to-speech systems. Since 1989 he has worked as an assistant professor in Phonetics at Utrecht University. He has spent the year 2001-2002 as a Fulbright Visiting Scholar at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, U.S.A., where he studied speech rhythm and other topics. From 1999-2006 he held an adjunct position in the Liberal Arts program at Utrecht University.
He is now a senior Associate Professor in Phonetics at Utrecht University. His current research topics include tempo and rhythm of speech, speech perception, aging and speech communication, and research methodology. He teaches courses in phonetics, linguistics and other topics at the BA, MA and graduate level.
