Towards a Semantic Syntax parser

Lisanne Teunissen (University of Nijmegen)

This paper describes a parser we are developing with the primary goal
of gaining more insight in a linguistic model, in particular that of
Semantic Syntax (Seuren 1996). This model aims at relating syntactic
phenomena to a semantic structure by means of a transformational
grammar. It is formalised into generative grammars for various
languages.

The Dutch parser we based on this model is a two-stage system. First, we use a pre-existing module called AMAZON for producing a Surface Structure. Then, a semantic parser transforms this structure into the corresponding Semantic Analysis according to the model of Semantic Syntax. This second module is the main topic of this paper. We describe the module as developed so far and go into some of the problems of implementing a parser based on an essentially transformational, generative model.
