Graduation songs (under construction)
It's a tradition in the Utrecht Department of Phonetics to honour newly graduated PhDs with a dedicated song. As a rule, the lyrics are written by a collective of faculty and fellow students, and commemorate the professional and personal highlights during the celebratee's four-year period of hardship that has come to an end. Melodies are simply stolen from traditional or modern popular songs. The graduation song is performed by an impromptu choir of phoneticians, linguists, as well as bystanders, at the party that obligatorily follows the graduation ceremony. Below are a few specimen. Unfortunately, I lost track of most of the texts, but my colleague Gerrit Bloothooft still has them available. So, check out his website in order to fully appreciate the musical as well as the literary craftsmanship in these wonderful little works of art.
