It holds the official records of the civic administration, the baptism-, marriage - and burial registers and (since 1815) the civil registration, as well as the archives of public notaries practising in Amsterdam (including thousands of probate inventories). Furthermore large quantities of primary and secondary sources documenting all aspects of the political, socio-economic, and cultural history, as well as the topography of Amsterdam. The library (established in 1848) reflects and supports these interests; its art-historical section includes general reference, books on prints, drawings, photography and topography as well as monographs on Amsterdam artists. It also possesses a respectable quantity of older imprints and important holdings of exhibition-, auction- and dealer's sale catalogues.
